Victoria, BC – The Canadian Hockey League, the Western Hockey League and SUBWAY® announced in Toronto, ON today the two Western Canadian centre’s which will host games during the six game cross Canada 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series.

The Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, B.C., will host the first game of the Western swing and fifth game of the series on Wednesday, November 25, with the defending WHL Champions Kelowna Rockets hosting the sixth and final game of the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series on Thursday, November 26.  The OHL’s Barrie Colts and Windsor Spitfires were announced on Tuesday as hosts of the third and fourth games of the series.  The opening two game hosts in the QMJHL will be announced Thursday.

“The SUBWAY® Super Series is a special preview of the World Junior Championship as it provides the final opportunity to evaluate players for the Canadian roster,” commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison, “This event also gives us the opportunity to showcase the WHL’s stars in Victoria, British Columbia’s capital, and Kelowna, the home of our defending WHL Champions.”

The SUBWAY® Super Series is an integral part of the identification process for Canada’s National Junior Team final selection camp as the top rated Canadian players in the WHL, OHL and QMJHL take on the Russian National Junior Team.  Hockey Canada’s Men’s National Team Head Scout Al Murray works with General Managers in each League to assemble the best Canadian talent for the QMJHL, OHL, and WHL All-Star teams. 

Team WHL improved their record to 11-1 in six years of competition against the Russian Selects with two victories last year including a 5-0 win in Swift Current, SK, on November 26, 2008, and a 2-1 win to close out the series in Prince Albert, SK, November 27, 2008.  Team Canada World Junior gold medalists Jordan Eberle and Zach Boychuk were named MVP’s of the games.

Last season, the CHL won five of the six games of the series before Canada captured its fifth straight gold medal at the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa, ON, with a victory over Sweden.  All 21 CHL players on Team Canada were selected to regional team rosters for the series.  Russia defeated Slovakia to claim bronze with 14 players from the 2008 CHL event on its roster.  The 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships will once again be played on Canadian soil in Saskatoon and Regina, SK.

All six games will be broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet with RDS televising both games from the QMJHL.
